The ABCs of Raising Toddlers

Welcome to Day 5, the last day of the Kid Blogger Network ABC series.  Here at Home Learning Journey, we are exploring the ABC’s of raising toddlers!  Today includes letters U through Z.

U: Unconditional Love

Anyone who has children completely understands that you never knew how much love you could have for a person until you have children! These little toddlers just have a way of melting your heart.  No matter if they are pretending that they cannot hear you, whining, throwing toys, refusing to help clean up, or whatever it is that your toddler is doing that is not so good at the moment, you still realize that while raising these toddlers, you have developed this massive heart full of unconditional love for your child.  No matter how they turn out as adults, no matter how much I might disagree with some of the choices they make, I will always love them.  I do not think there is anything stronger than a mother’s love for their children!

V: Vacuuming Frequently

A huge part of raising toddlers is how often you have to vacuum (if you have carpets)!  My oh my, these toddlers are crazy!  I vacuum the bedrooms and the living room at least once a day if not more.  If I even skip one day of vacuuming, the floor looks awful! My almost 4-year-old daughter loves to “help” vacuum so she will get her pink toy vacuum and vacuum right along with me.

Some toddlers are afraid of the vacuum but thankfully mine have never been!  They even like for me to pretend I am going to run them over and suck them up!  In fact, I will even take the hose attachment and suck part of their shirt or pants up and they just giggle hysterically.

Hey, no one said doing chores had to be boring!

W: Whining

Raising toddlers can be hard, especially when it comes to those who are not yet speaking. They oftentimes will whine because they cannot say what they want to say.  My 20 month old toddler has a limited vocabulary so when we cannot figure out exactly what he is trying to say and what is causing him to whine, I usually just ask him to “show mommy” so that he will run to whatever the problem is and point.  If he fell down and got hurt, he will point on his body.  I usually say what he is pointing at in words in hopes that when he finally starts speaking more, he already knows what everything is.

On the other hand, my older toddler will whine when she is overly tired, hurt, or sick.  Since she is older, I usually just remind her that “mommy cannot understand you when you do not use your big girl words.”  Then we can usually have a conversation about what is bothering her.

X: Xylophone

I know I got easy with letter X when it comes to raising toddlers!  Most toddlers like playing with xylophones or anything that they can bang to make music really!  I really need to get one for my son.  They are a lot cooler than they used to be.  Like this one looks really fun!

Y: Yawning

I am blessed with great sleepers.  Both my younger and older toddler sleep from 7:45 p.m. to between 7:00-8:30 a.m.  On top of the nighttime sleep, the younger toddler also takes a nap starting between 12:45-1:30 p.m. (depending on what time he woke up in the morning) until 3:30 p.m.

When it comes to sleep, raising toddlers can be tricky. Even when they are yawning and rubbing their eyes, they will try their hardest to stay up just because they do not want to miss out on anything!  The more the yawn, the more tired they are and eventually they will not be able to keep their little eyes open any longer.

Did you know that they yawn in the womb too?  My little one due next month was yawning in her ultrasound.  While she is not a toddler (yet), I just wanted to share a picture of her yawning just because it fits the theme!

Z: Zoo Trips

A fun part of raising toddlers is all the fun places you can take them to, especially the zoo! Most toddlers love animals so what better place to take them than the zoo?  We do not go that often since the weather here in the Pacific Northwest is not so accommodating to toddlers wanting to visit the zoo.  Picture taking at the zoo is great too because of the backgrounds and scenery you can get!  When we go, we go when it opens and stay through lunch and head home for nap!  We also visit the souvenir shop and get a little something for each of the kids and fudge for mom and dad.
